The global economic crisis demanded a greater role for governments, and meant large deficits.
Indeed the Economist magazine recently complained 'big government was back with a vengeance'.
Today, David Hetherington says it's not about the size of government but how effectively it's managing the economy. Large deficits were inevitable. He says people in Australia don't much care about big or small -- they want better government.
Oliver Hartwich argues it's now time for governments to wind back or risk more economic crisis.
